Summer field crops – 2025

Commercial maize

The size of the expected commercial maize crop has been set at 14,559 million tons, which is 4,65% or 647 450 tons more than the previous forecast of 13,911 million tons. The area estimate for total maize is 2,597 million ha while the expected yield is 5,61 t/ha.

The estimated maize crop is 13,30% or 1,709 million tons larger than the 2024 crop. The three main maize producing areas, namely the Free State, Mpumalanga and North West provinces are expected to produce 81% of the 2025 crop.

The production forecast of white maize is 7,695 million tons, which is 4,05% or 299 500 tons more than the 7,396 million tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for white maize is 1,600 million ha with an expected yield of 4,81 t/ha.

In the case of yellow maize, the production forecast is 6,863 million tons, which is 5,34% or 347 950 tons more than the 6,515 million tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for yellow maize is 997 000 ha with an expected yield of 6,88 t/ha.

Please note that information from the objective yield survey by the NCSC for the Mpumalanga province will be available in April 2025; and for the Free State and North West provinces in May 2025. The current yield figures are mainly obtained from producers in the different provinces.

Other summer crops

Sunflower seed: The production forecast for sunflower seed is 770 500 tons, which is 7,01% or 50 450 tons more than the previous forecast of 720 050 tons. The area estimate for sunflower seed is 555 700 ha, while the expected yield is 1,39 t/ha.

Other crops

The production forecast for soybeans increased by 2,78% or 64 700 tons to 2,390 million tons. The estimated area planted to soy­beans is 1,151 million ha, with an expected yield of 2,08 t/ha.

The expected groundnut crop has been set at 66 929 tons, which is 2,40% or 1 570 tons more than the previous forecast of 65 359 tons. For groundnuts, the area estimate is 48 125 ha, with an expected yield of 1,39 t/ha.

The production forecast for sorghum is 137 435 tons, which is 6,03% or 7 815 tons more than the 129 620 tons of the previous forecast. The area estimate for sorghum increased to 41 150 ha and the expected yield is 3,34 t/ha.

In the case of dry beans, the production forecast is 79 007 tons. The area estimate of dry beans is now 45 620 ha, with an expected yield of 1,73 t/ha.


Please note that the third production forecast for summer field crops for 2025 will be released on 30 April 2025. The intentions to plant winter cereals for 2025 will also be released on 30 April 2025.

Somergewasse – 2025

Kommersiële mielies

Die grootte van die verwagte kommersiële mielie-oes is op 14,559 miljoen ton gestel, wat 4,65% of 647 450 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 13,911 miljoen ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir totale mielies is 2,597 miljoen ha terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 5,61 t/ha is.

In die geval van geelmielies is die produksieskatting 6,863 mil­joen ton, wat 5,34% of 347 950 ton meer is as die 6,515 miljoen ton van die vorige skatting. Die oppervlakteskatting vir geel­mielies is 997 000 ha en die opbrengs is 6,88 t/ha.

Neem kennis dat inligting van die objektiewe opbrengs-opname van die Konsortium vir die Mpumalanga provinsie, in April 2025 gerapporteer word en vir die Vrystaat en Noordwes provinsies in Mei 2025. Die huidige opbrengs syfers is hoofsaaklik verkry vanaf produsente in die verskillende provinsies.

Ander somergewasse

Sonneblomsaad: Die produksieskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 770 500 ton, wat 7,01% of 50 450 ton meer is as die vorige skatting van 720 050 ton. Die oppervlakteskatting vir sonneblomsaad is 555 700 ha, terwyl die verwagte opbrengs 1,39 t/ha is.

Ander gewasse

Die produksieskatting van sojabone is vermeerder met 2,78% of 64 700 ton na 2,390 miljoen ton. Die geskatte oppervlakte beplant van sojabone is 1,151 miljoen ha, met 'n verwagte opbrengs van 2,08 t/ha.

Inligting is beskikbaar aanlyn by die Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development of by SAGIS, vanaf 14:30 op die dag van die toepaslike vergadering van die Oesskattings­komitee.

CONFIDENTIALITY ISSUES that CEC members are committed to adhere to on the day of the meeting

  • Personal items such as laptops, handbags, cell phones, etc. are not allowed in the venue during the meeting.
  • No member is allowed to leave the meeting before 12:00 in order to prevent disclosure of the information. The embargo time for the release of crop estimates information is 14:30.
  • No member is allowed to discuss crop estimates information with anyone other than a member of the Committee before the embargo time. Only the Chairperson, or a member appointed by the Chairperson, may release the figures to the media.
  • Members must regard the detail of any information that was collected for and/or discussed during the meeting, as confidential. Individual information received for crop estimate purposes is treated strictly confidential, and is not divulged for any other purposes.
