2017 production season

Wheat: The expected commercial production of wheat is 1,475 million tons, which is 6,7% or 105 800 tons less than the previous forecast of 1,581 million tons, whilst the expected yield is 3,00 t/ha. The main reason for the decrease in wheat production is that farmers harvested poorer than expected yields, especially in the Western Cape, as they experienced drought during the past season.

The expected production in the Western Cape decreased by 14,3% or 97 800 tons, from 684 600 tons to 586 800 tons against the previous forecast.

The production forecast for the Free State also decreased slightly by 2,6% or 8 000 tons, from 304 000 tons to 296 000 tons. In the Northern Cape, the expected production forecast remained unchanged at 304 000 tons.

The area estimate for wheat is 491 600 ha.

Other crops: The production forecast for malting barley is 298 564 tons, which is 6,2% or 17 505 tons more than the previous forecast of 281 059 tons. The area planted is estimated at 91 380 ha, while the expected yield is 3,27 t/ha.

The expected canola crop was adjusted downwards by 4,4% or 4 200 tons to 92 400 tons. The area estimate for canola is 84 000 ha, with an expected yield of 1,10 t/ha.

Please note that the sixth production forecast for winter cereals for 2017 will be released on 30 January 2018.

2017 produksieseisoen
